EXPERTS LINK HAIR RELAXERS TO FIBROID

The dependency of African Women on Hair relaxers is truly worrisome especially as  most women are not well informed about the chemicals present in these relaxers. Women relax their hair at least once every month and this ritual continues mostly for the rest of their lives. Being exposed to potentially harmful chemicals in small doses for a long period of time is whats absolutely scary. Hair companies do not print all the chemicals present in black hair products, if they did they’d probably go out of business. I realize there isn’t  a lot of advocacy on this issue which is also interesting as i would assume people would want to know more about what they put in their hair, and once they know its harmful, would want to spread the message across to others.  I always hypothesized that the use of relaxers, in the long run would cause some sort of ailment. But like all scientific hypothesis, it has to be tested. Seeing I’m just a young Scientist with no fancy lab or high tech equipment to call my own, i decided to do what scientists do best which is to find some sort of evidence..but this time using good old Google. I’m happy to say i found a recent study on this.
A new study in the American Journal of Epidemiology has linked hair relaxers to uterine fibroids, as well as early puberty in young girls.
Scientists followed more than 23,000 pre-menopausal Black American women from 1997 to 2009 and found that the two- to three-times higher rate of fibroids among black women may be linked to chemical exposure through scalp lesions and burns resulting from relaxers.
Women who got their first menstrual period before the age of 10 were also more likely to have uterine fibroids, and early menstruation may result from hair products black girls are using, according to a separate study published in the Annals of Epidemiology last summer.
Three hundred African American, African Caribbean, Hispanic, and White women in New York City were studied. The women’s first menstrual period varied anywhere from age 8 to age 19, but African Americans, who were more likely to use straightening and relaxers hair oils, also reached menarche earlier than other racial/ethnic groups.
While so far, there is only an association rather than a cause and effect relationship between relaxers, fibroid tumors, and puberty, many experts have been quick to point out that the hair care industry isn’t regulated by the FDA, meaning that there’s no definite way to fully know just how harmful standard Black hair care products really are.
Fibroid Facts
Fibroids are tumors that grow in the uterus. They are benign, which means they are not cancerous, and are made up of muscle fibers. Fibroids can be as small as a pea and can grow as large as a melon. It is estimated that 20-50% of women have, or will have, fibroids at some time in their lives.

From lessons in Epidemiology, i  learnt that A might be associated with B but not the cause of B. In this case the study found that  there is only an association rather than a cause and effect relationship between relaxers and fibroid tumors. In lay terms this means relaxers are associated with fibroid tumours  but relaxers are not the reason why people get fibroid according to this study.
Until more research is done in this area we cant dispel anything with confidence. My hypothesis remains a hypothesis until someone spends years looking into this. PhD thesis anyone?

RAPPER MUNACHI ABII ENGAGES MODE 9 IN WAR OF WORDS

Beauty queen turned rapper, Munachi Abii otherwise known as Muna have engaged veteran rapper, Mode 9 in war of words.
Both rappers were engaged in a word battle at the just concluded “Nokia Dont Break the Beat” rap contest which took place at the GET Arena on Saturday, April 28, 2012.
Modenine who happens to be the head judge for the competition alongside DJ Jimmy JATT and Knighthouse record label boss Rogba Arimoro had decided that ‘T.K.O’ (a contestant)  had won the final rap bout, with the first runner  up being Black Jeez.
Muna sought a different opinion and made it known as she contended the judges’ decision by saying she did not agree with the decision, claiming she had a say in the judgement.
‘I don’t agree with you but, my opinion matters too, you know’, Muna told Modenine.
A clearly pissed off Modenine tried to clear Muna as to what her role as a host should be and how vastly experienced he was a Hip-Hop veteran. ‘I’ve been listening to hip-hop for a long time, trust me, you have to respect my opinion’, the rap veteran told Muna right in front of the crowd.
‘I’ve also been listening to Hip-Hop for a long time, I respect your decision but my opinion matters, please pass the mic men’, Muna rudely replied Modenine right in front of the mammoth crowd.
Speaking with Nigezie right after the show, Modenine said ‘she was very disrespectful but I had to put her in check immediately. I was called here to judge because of my level of experience….It was very wrong for her to just cut me off’.
For DJ Jimmy Jatt, what she did was  very wrong. Judges are judges, comperes are comperes’. The veteran DJ disclosed that there were other things Muna was doing wrong on stage but they all decided to overlook it.
We learnt from a source that Muna has yet to issue an apology to Modenine nor other judges since the incident.

CAMROUNEAN GOVERNMENT BLACKLIST TB JOSHUA

Below is an excerpt sent Gistclan from an African Newspaper.
The Newspaper reports claims the Cameroonian government has blacklisted Prophet Temitope Balogun Joshua of the Synagogue Church of All Nations, saying that he is an agent of satan hoodwinking unsuspecting members of the public with “diabolical miracles”.

Cameroon Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr. Henri Eyebe Ayissi, in an official communiqué he issued titled:
“The Devil Is In the House”, described T.B. Joshua as a “son of the devil” pretending to be “a man of God.”

The minister warned hundreds of Cameroonians, trooping to Lagos, South West Nigeria, for miracles in Joshua’s church, to desist from taking the trip or face the consequences, as the country will not stand by them.

The communiqué written in French read in part: “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns those who by naivety or deception of Emmanuel TV’s captivating images, or even those who by hopelessness, envisage taking the pilgrimage to Pastor T.B. Joshua’s Synagogue Church Of All Nations in Lagos, that they will do so at their own risk.

“The Cameroonian Government warns these pilgrims that they will face the consequences alone. This is motivated by the painful and shameful fact that Cameroonian men and women, in search of deliverance and blessings, once in that church, find themselves in bestial and pitiable conditions.

“Women are Molested; pilgrims dispossessed of their belongings by armed robbers and left to sleep on the streets at the mercy of gangs. Many cases of assassinations have even been recorded. And this is without other cases that are not recorded at the Cameroonian Embassy in Lagos with the victims too ashamed to narrate their infernal odysseys once they are out of Hell,” the minister said.

The minister said that while the bible asks us to be discreet with gifts and donations to the poor, T.B. Joshua is seen daily dolling out bags of rice to indigent people.

It was learnt that
hundreds of Cameroonians who sold their properties or borrowed money in the hope of getting miracles in T.B. Joshua’s Church, only got disappointed in Lagos.

It was also reported that Prophet TB Joshua’s TV station has gained popularity in Cameroon and many people are tempted to take the trip and receive healings and sudden blessings. It says that Joshua is now in many households in Cameroon and many people believe the flashy images they watch on television.
